Understanding Chafing

Chafing is a common complaint, which can leave you feeling sore, tender and uncomfortable.

Runners, athletes, hikers and those who lead an active lifestyle are most prone to chafing, as these activities cause increased friction between skin surfaces and clothing, this is further exacerbated by sweat.

Chafing may seem like a minor issue, but it can be painful and frustrating to manage and treat, impacting comfort and performance during exercise and whilst carrying out daily activities.

The good news is Sudocrem® is here to help soothe some of chafing’s unpleasant side effects and help you focus on hitting that personal best, getting you through your workout and your day-to-day activities with minimal discomfort.

What causes chafing?

Chafing is primarily caused from repetitive friction between skin surfaces, especially during movement or physical activity. This friction wears down the skin, resulting in abrasions.

Chafing can be extremely uncomfortable. The prolonged rubbing can cause discomfort, stinging sensations, and in some cases, it can cause, red, bleeding and crusting abrasions which may need medical attention. Affected areas may also feel itchy and skin may be flaky and dry.

Areas commonly affected include the inner thighs, underarms, groin and beneath the breasts.

Here are some factors that contribute to chafing:

  • Moisture: Sweating during exercise or during hot weather can make skin more susceptible to friction related abrasions. The salt from sweat can also cause a stinging sensation.

  • Skin on Skin Friction: When you move or exercise, certain parts of your body are likely to rub together, causing friction which wears down the protective outer layer of the skin.

  • Clothing: Clothing can also contribute to chafing, particularly when it fits poorly or during hot, humid conditions. Additionally, certain fabrics, particularly those that do not wick moisture away from the skin, can trap sweat and exacerbate the problem.

How to prevent chafing

To prevent chafing and minimise discomfort, consider implementing the following measure:

Stay dry: opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics such as nylon or polyester blends. Avoid clothing with rough seams or tags that may rub against your skin.

How to treat chafing

Chafing can heal within a couple of days if you remove the underlying cause, but we know how important it is to soothe and treat the affected area, helping provide relief, alleviating symptoms, and protecting the skin from further irritation.

How to Use Sudocrem® Antiseptic Healing Cream for Chafing:

  1. Remove the Underlying Cause: Identify what’s causing the chafing. It could be friction from clothing, moisture, or other factors. Once you know the cause, take steps to minimise it.
  2. Clean the Affected Area: Gently wash and dry the chafed skin area with mild soap and water. Pat it dry
  3. Apply Sudocrem®: Use clean hands, take a small amount of Sudocrem®, and apply it using gentle circular motions. Create a thin, translucent layer – no vigorous rubbing, as that may worsen the irritation.
  4. Repeat as Needed: Reapply Sudocrem® as often as needed, or whenever you experience discomfort.
  5. Give your skin time to heal: Avoid further irritation during this period. If you can’t avoid the triggering activity completely, take protective measures while continuing the activity.

How Sudocrem® Antiseptic Healing Cream Works to Soothe Chafed Skin

Sudocrem®, a trusted skincare product, offers effective relief for chafed skin. Here’s how it works:

  • Treats Inflamed Skin: Our formulation helps calm irritated skin and reduce redness

  • Moisturising Properties: Proper hydration is crucial for healing and restoring skin integrity. Sudocrem® helps replenish the skin’s moisture barrier, which may become compromised due to friction and irritation. By keeping the skin hydrated, it supports the healing process.

  • Mild Pain Relief: The discomfort caused by chafing can be painful. Sudocrem® contains mild anaesthetic that help alleviate this discomfort.

  • Protective Barrier: Sudocrem® creates a protective barrier on the skin’s surface. This barrier acts as a shield, reducing friction between the skin and clothing or other skin surfaces. By preventing further irritation and damage, it allows the skin to heal naturally.
