If we are what we eat, then it makes sense that the foods which we eat have a big impact on our skin. If you drink a lot of alcohol, it tends to dry your skin out, and if you eat a lot of salt it can have the same effect. However, there are also foods which help your skin to look great.
These are some of our top skin-friendly foods:
Avocados
If you didn’t already love avocados and experimenting with avocado recipes, you will have one more reason to now. Avocados contain, in addition to lots of skin-friendly vitamin E, compounds which may protect your skin from sun damage. UV rays from the sun can cause wrinkles and other signs of skin ageing, so any protection from it is most welcome.
Fish
Specifically, fish which have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are needed to keep our skin moisturised, strong and supple. The omega-3 in fish can also help to reduce inflammation which causes acne and redness. Good fish to opt for are salmon, mackerel, tuna, or herring.
Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons are high in vitamin C. Vitamin C is another antioxidant which protects your skin from damage caused by the sun and the environment in general, and can help to make the vitamin E you eat even more effective.
Orange vegetables
In particular carrots and sweet potatoes. These both contain a nutrient called beta-carotene, which is a carotenoid that helps to keep your skin healthy by performing as a natural sunblock. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need to put on sun protection cream, but it does help to further protect you from sunburn and dry and wrinkled skin. Also, if you eat a lot of beat-carotene, it can give you a sunny orange hue to your skin, which can help to give you a generally healthier appearance.
