Tips on Living Sustainably

We know that we need to start living more sustainably. Not only does it help to preserve resources and protect the environment, but living more sustainably can also help you to save some money!

Use a reusable water bottle

This goes for coffee cups too. A lot of coffee shops now offer discounts for those who use reusable cups rather than the disposable cardboard ones.

If it’s not in use, turn it off

Leaving your TV and computer plugged in and on standby is a common habit. As is leaving phone chargers plugged in with the socket turned on. Any charger that is plugged in at the wall and not switched off at the socket will use some electricity, even if it’s not plugged into the device it is meant to charge.

Buy from sustainable businesses

This involves doing a bit of background research on the companies which you buy from, but it’s worth it if you want to live more sustainably. Look up the environmental policy which the companies you commonly buy from have and stop buying from any which harm the environment. Instead identify companies who use recyclable packaging, and who support green initiatives and then buy their products.

Buy local

Local, small businesses need all the support they can get, especially now. By buying local from the likes of farm shops you can reduce the carbon footprint of the food you eat.

Choose quality over quantity

More expensive doesn’t always mean better, but in general if you spend a bit more on a quality product, it will last longer and you won’t need to replace it so often. By buying quality, you can buy less often and actually save money in the long run!

Evaluate your usage

For one day (or a week if you want to be particularly thorough) write down everything that you use. This will include metal (drinks cans is a good example), plastic (wrappings on food is a common daily use), clothing you use, oils (petrol counts), food, electronics, and any other resources you use. Look back over this resource list and think about how you can reduce your use, recycle some resources, and reuse resources.

Use green travel

Where possible, walk, take public transport, or cycle rather than drive. If you do drive, try to ride share. If you find the idea of cycling a bit daunting, try investing in an electric bike to help keep you going when you come to a hill.

These are just a few ideas. Of course, there are others things you can do to live more sustainably, but picking a few of these tips to follow could be a good place to start from.
