The scents which are around us can have significant effects on our mood. So with this in mind, if you’re not sure what scent to choose for your next bath, or shower, or just which scented candle to light, then maybe our list of scents and their effects will help you choose.
Lavender
Lavender is a light floral scent which is great for calming the mind and body, and has been widely used to promote sleep and treat insomnia. If you need to get some rest, lavender is a good scent to go for.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is a sweet-smelling spice which, as well as reminding us of Christmas, can sharpen your mind. A scientific study found that participants who smelled cinnamon before completing cognitive tasks had improved cognitive functions like working memory and attention span.
Pine
Pine can reduce stress and anxiety levels. One Japanese study found that participants who went for a walk through pine forests had significantly reduced levels of stress and depression.
Citrus
Lemon, orange, and lime all help to boost energy levels and alertness.
Freshly-cut grass
This scent makes you feel more joyful. It’s also been claimed that it can prevent mental decline as you grow older.
Peppermint
It can be a bit overpowering if used too liberally, but it’s just the job if you’re looking for a smell that will boost your concentration.
Jasmine
If in doubt, opt for the charming, sweet scent of jasmine. Jasmine not only creates a sense of alertness, but it also helps relieve depressive feelings, and can lead to an uplifted mood. (Great for if you need to do some studying, but you’re not feeling very happy about doing it!)
