1931 was a notable year, historically speaking. Dracula starring Bela Lugosi was released. The first Highway Code was issued. Whipsnade Zoo opened. And Sudocrem was created. This year, we are celebrating 90 years of Sudocrem!
Sudocrem: A Timeline
1931
Professor Thomas Smith was a pharmacist in Dublin in 1931. He wanted to create a formula to help ease some of the skin conditions he treated at the time, such as nappy rash, eczema, sores and other skin lesions. He used science and nature to create a unique blend in the back of his pharmacy, and named it Smith’s Cream.
1940s
The formula’s popularity grew, and new, bigger manufacturing premises were needed.
1950s
Smith’s Cream was renamed Sudocrem, which came from the Irish pronunciation of the product’s nickname ‘Soothing Cream’.
1960s
Professor Smith began personally delivering samples of his Sudocrem to new mothers as part of a marketing strategy. It worked, and Sudocrem became popular all over Ireland.
1977
Sudocrem is launched in Northern Ireland, and the Northwest of England.
1980s
Sudocrem is launched nationally in the UK. Over the next 20 years, Sudocrem quickly becomes the market leader in nappy rash products.
2007
Sudocrem is Number One in the UK for nappy rash treatment.
2019
Sudocrem is Number Four globally for nappy rash treatment.
2021
Sudocrem is 90 years old! Not only that, but the formula is unchanged since its days as Smith’s Cream.
